India should take note of China’s activities in its backyard

There is much anxiety in India over the numerous self-immolations in Tibet, the postponement of the expected visit of the Chinese vice-president to India, Beijing’s relentless stridency about the Dalai Lama, China’s protests against Indian shipping and oil exploration in the South China Sea, China’s use of port facilities in Seychelles for its patrols in the Indian Ocean and its apparent paranoia about Indian ‘ambitions’ in concert with Japan, Australia, the United States of America and the countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, all of whom share legitimate concerns over Chinese assertions of an exclusive sphere of influence in the South China Sea.
